Today the Puerto Rico Senate unanimously approved a resolution demanding that Governor Ricardo Rosello and the Secretary of the Department of Transportation, Carlos Contreras, cancel the contract with GILA LLC. GILA LLC is in charge of collecting the fines on the tollways, and is one of the target defendants in the class action filed in federal court by Colón Ramírez LLC. According to the Exposition of Motives of Senate Resolution 857, "It is evident that the actions of GILA LLC distance themselves from the sense of diligence and commitment with which the suppliers to the government of Puerto Rico should tend the concerns of the residents of Puerto Rico. As quoted in the media, the President of the Senate, Thomas Rivera Schatz stated: "If we have a business that does not want to meet its responsibility like GILA, then it's worth nothing. The question is how much longer do we have to wait for someone at the Department of Justice, the Department of Transportation and Public Words, to suggest the contract with this business be cancelled." At the same time, the Senate also approved a resolution to reduce to $15.00 the fine for passing a toll without sufficient funds in their account. A similar measure is pending in the House.
